Undergraduate Media Production Research Assistant Position!
Dr. Joceline Andersen in Communication and Visual Arts is hiring 1 undergraduate Media Production Research Assistant to work 5-10 hours per week from Jan-April 2026 on the production of a 7-9 minute, student-led original video. The rate is $24.60/hour for a total of 100 hours.
The Student Media Production Research Assistant would work with a MA in Human Rights and Social Justice graduate student research assistant under the guidance of 3 CVA faculty (Joceline, Peter Zakrzewski and Jennifer Chrumka) to produce a student-led video on local Indigenous responses to salmon decline in the Lower Nicola Valley for the Scw’exmx Tribal Council.
5 minutes of finished audio have already been completed by students in F25 from interviews with Elders.
Student media production research assistants would:
· Meet weekly with faculty and collaborating undergrad student to work on the video, for 5-10 hours per week. Video production is time intensive work.
· Be interested in local Nlaka’pamux and Syilx responses to salmon decline in the Lower Nicola
· Be interested in developing media production skills (any experience is an asset but not required)
· Be culturally sensitive to Indigenous representation onscreen
· Lead video creative direction and execution under supervision from CVA faculty
· Assist in the planning and organization of 2-3 interviews with policy makers and community leaders
· Travel to Merritt twice with CVA faculty to lead interviews and video recording of secondary footage of land and environment
· Record video and audio using smartphone and/or professional recording equipment (WILL TRAIN)
· Create a script that highlights responses to salmon decline based on information gathered from interviews and research
· Use Adobe Premiere Pro, ClipChamp or other editing software under the direction of CVA faculty (WILL TRAIN) to edit original footage and audio
· Deliver a finished, student-quality 7-9 minute video by April 15, 2026 for publication on Scw’exmx Tribal Council YouTube and screening at 2 events in Merritt and Kamloops (all IP returned to Scw’exmx Tribal Council)
Communication students produced the first video in this series last year in collaboration with 2 MAHRSJ students. This is a rewarding, intensive media production experience for students looking for challenge and community engagement.
