Communications Assistant
The Team
With successful completion of your application for the Communications Assistant position, you will be joining a team of five at the Kamloops Fire Centre. The Communications and Engagement team plays a consistent and supportive role at the Kamloops Fire Centre. As one of three Communications Assistants, you will report to the Communications Specialist and be responsible for supporting communications and engagement initiatives for this region. Our team interacts with every work group in the Kamloops Fire Centre and gets the opportunity to interact with staff from each of the five fire zones, allowing us to build and strengthen relationships across the region. Working under the Community Engagement Specialist, this team plays a role in supporting and maintaining relationships with partners and emergency response agencies throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre.
The Role
The Communication Assistants play a critical role in delivering the communication initiatives for this region, with a focus on both internal and external communications projects. These projects help support staff, partners, media, and members of the public in understanding, and being informed on wildfire response. As a Communication Assistant you will get the opportunity to develop your communication skills, both verbally and written, as well as bring creative and unique ideas to an open and accepting team. As a member of this team, you can gain experience working with different response agencies and communities within this region. This position will help build competencies and skills in working in fast paced and dynamic situations but is also balanced with long and short term project work focused on new initiatives and polishing products that this team is responsible for.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Technical diploma in a field related to communications, public relations, journalism or equivalent knowledge; or
- Grade 12 and an equivalent combination of education, training and 2 years related experience in communications.
- Valid Class 5 driver licence.

- To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures.
- To keep current on emerging issues.
- To take in-house training and certification as required.
- To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
- To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
- To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
- To participate in ICS positions as assigned.
- To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.
